This paper examines the quality of electoral representation in western democracies, by comparing movements in the political preferences of citizens and the positions of political parties within the two-dimensional electoral space of eight countries between 1990 and 2009 with special attention to the preferences of occupational groups.

Democracy means "rule by the people", but in complex and populous societies the people cannot be involved in every decision of government. The western system, therefore, consists of representative democratic structures (in the Westminster tradition by MPs who are expected to represent different groups of people). The representation of public opinion in public policy is of obvious importance in representative democracies. Not surprisingly, then, there is a considerable body of research addressing the connection between the public and the government. This work is broad and varied. These 35 democracies were chosen because they had a population of at least 2 million and received a 2012 Freedom House Average Freedom Ranking of 1 or 2.
